Trapeze Networks(R), Pleasanton, Calif., the award-winning provider
of Smart Mobile(TM) wireless solutions, has received the 2007 Frost
& Sullivan Award for Industry Innovation & Advancement of the
Year for the European market. Trapeze won the prestigious award for its
introduction of Smart Mobile Phase Two, which builds on and extends the
company's original Smart Mobile solution that was launched last
year. Frost & Sullivan, a leading global technology consulting and
research firm, gives this award each year to a company that "has
proven to be a leader in the industry and that, through its pioneering
technology, sound business strategy, and research efforts, has been
successful in moving the state of the industry forward." The award
citation noted that Smart Mobile Phase Two "adds a critical new
dimension to today's WLAN deployments that is genuinely new to the
market: the non-stop WLAN." Key innovations in Smart Mobile Phase
Two result in the industry's first and only WLAN with always-on
availability and resiliency.
"We are extremely proud to have received this major industry
award for Smart Mobile Phase Two," said Jim Vogt, president and
chief executive officer, Trapeze Networks. "As Wi-Fi rapidly
becomes an essential part of enterprise network infrastructures -- not
just a convenience -- it must meet a demanding new set of requirements.
With the capabilities being introduced in phase two of Smart Mobile,
Trapeze becomes the first and only vendor to address these requirements,
delivering performance, scalability, and reliability on par with
today's largest and most advanced wired networks."
Rigorous Selection Methodology and Measurement Criteria
In choosing the award recipient, Frost & Sullivan analysts
tracked emerging and existing markets and evaluated the contributions of
industry participants, through interviews with major market participants
and extensive secondary research. Industry contributions that analysts
considered included elements such as the creation of new industry
standards and the adoption of a product or process by leading
manufacturers. Analysts then compared and ranked competitors for
relative position and presented the award to the company that "has
most altered the industry due to its creativeness and innovation."
Smart Mobile, Phase Two
Announced in June 2007, Smart Mobile Phase Two supports the
largest-scale enterprise wireless LAN deployments and mission-critical
applications through a new generation of high-performance software and
hardware. It includes three new components:
-- Industry-leading wireless availability, reliability, and
scalability -- advanced enterprise enhancements to Trapeze's
Mobility System(R) Software (MSS(TM)) that deliver the industry's
first and only always-on, non-stop WLAN; and
-- Highest-performance WLAN controller -- the Mobility Exchange(R)
2800 (MX(R)-2800), the industry's first and only 28 Gbps WLAN
controller; and
-- Highest-performance 802.11n access point -- the Mobility
Point(R) 432 (MP(R)-432), providing the industry's smoothest, most
cost-effective migration path to 802.11n.
The Non-stop WLAN -- Delivers Industry's Highest Availability
and Resiliency
Frost & Sullivan recognized Smart Mobile Phase Two as adding
"a critical new dimension to today's WLAN deployments that is
genuinely new to the market: the non-stop WLAN." Smart Mobile Phase
Two delivers this capability -- an industry first -- through major
enhancements to Trapeze Mobility System Software, including new
approaches to WLAN switch management such as "cluster
switching" and "cluster configuration." These
enhancements enable all switches in the network to act collectively as a
single virtual switch, providing many-to-many redundancy, hitless
failover, and zero-downtime in-service upgrades. The net result is to
deliver the industry's highest WLAN availability and resiliency.
Highest Capacity WLAN Controller
In citing Trapeze's technology innovation versus competitors,
the award recognized the company's new MX-2800 as "the
highest-capacity controller announced by any WLAN vendor to date."
As the industry's first and only controller providing 28 Gbps of
throughput, the MX-2800 also supports greatest number of active client
devices (12,000).
802.11n: The Future of WLAN without Costly Forklift Upgrades
The Frost & Sullivan award contrasted Trapeze's unique
Smart Mobile architecture, which enables wireless traffic to be
forwarded at the access point layer without having to pass through a
WLAN controller, with the centralized legacy approaches of vendors such
as Cisco and Aruba, which require all traffic to pass through a central
controller. This uniquely allows Trapeze customers to deploy
802.11n-based MP-432 access points without having to upgrade their WLAN
switching infrastructure, resulting in significant cost savings.
"As Cisco and Aruba customers deploy 802.11n access points,
they will likely exceed the throughput ratings of current generation
Cisco and Aruba controllers, and will have to incur costly forklift
upgrades of their switching infrastructure," the award citation
stated. Commenting that other WLAN vendors have responded to Smart
Mobile Phase Two with similar sounding initiatives, the award citation
stated "Upon closer inspection however, these vendors require new
architectures (such as Meru's 3-Tier Distribution System) in order
to support the new bandwidth required by 802.11n."
"Setting the Industry Agenda"
The award citation noted that Trapeze continues to maintain an
aggressive technology leadership position, with the most advanced,
enterprise-class WLAN in the industry. The announcement of Smart Mobile
Phase Two "again puts Trapeze on the offensive, setting the
industry agenda and forcing its competitors to respond."
About Trapeze Networks
Trapeze Networks delivers Smart Mobile(TM) -- a ground-breaking
approach to wireless networking, enabling organizations to deploy
massively scalable mobile applications that leverage their existing
infrastructure. Smart Mobile achieves this breakthrough by introducing
intelligent switching, the first and only WLAN architecture that
optimizes network traffic based on the underlying application. With
Smart Mobile intelligent switching, organizations can support the most
demanding next generation wireless applications such as toll-quality
voice over WLAN for thousands of users, seamless indoor/outdoor
mobility, and high-speed networks based on 802.11n -- all without
requiring expensive forklift upgrades. Trapeze Networks is
well-capitalized, with strategic investments from networking industry
leaders including Juniper Networks, Motorola, and Nortel Networks.
