Dr. David E. Stout of Youngstown State University is the 2007
recipient of the Outstanding Ohio Accounting Educator Award, which was
presented on May 11 during the annual American Accounting Association
(AAA) Ohio Region awards banquet held in Columbus.
Stout is the John S. & Doris M. Andrews chair of accounting in
the Williamson College of Business Administration at Youngstown State
University (YSU), where he is a tenured professor and teaches courses in
cost accounting and managerial accounting. He has been an accounting
educator for 28 years, teaching in public and private institutions at
both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
"At the end of each course I teach, I thank my students for
giving me an opportunity to be part of their education and professional
growth," Stout said. "Through my interaction with students I
am able to have a direct and substantive impact on the lives of young
people--I celebrate this opportunity."
During his time at YSU, Stout has been instrumental in revising and
enhancing the undergraduate cost accounting course and the MBA
managerial accounting course. He continually recruits students to the
accounting major, and has effectively helped many to secure positions
with various firms and organizations. His student evaluations of
teaching effectiveness have always been positive and near the top in the
accounting and finance department.

"It is rare to find a faculty member who is an exceptional
teacher, researcher, organizational contributor and leader in the
profession. He has distinguished himself through his excellence in
teaching, commitment to his students' development and service to
the profession," said Betty Jo Licata, dean of the Williamson
College of Business Administration at YSU.
Stout has made enduring contributions to professional
organizations, such as the Institute of Management Accountants, which
named him the recipient of the national 2007 R. Lee Brummet Award based
on his distinguished teaching career and service to the accounting
profession. He has been highly involved with AAA, and recently accepted
the office of president-elect for the AAA Ohio Region. He is also a
member of the Decision Sciences Institute, the Federation of Schools of
Accountancy and the Academy of Business Education, to name a few.
He has published more than 70 academic journal articles and is a
member of the editorial review boards for five journals, including
Issues in Accounting Education, Journal of International Accounting
Auditing and Taxation, and Strategic Finance/Management Accounting
Quarterly. In addition, he recently co-authored a 920-page book titled
Cost Management: A Strategic Emphasis, which was published by McGraw
Hill/Irwin.
"An award such as this is possible only if one has diligent,
hard-working students, trusted colleagues and a supportive institutional
environment. I apply effort and determination, but these three factors
are critical to a successful career as a professor," Stout said.
The Outstanding Ohio Accounting Educator award is presented each
year to an accounting educator who has made extraordinary contributions
to the accounting profession and whose teaching skills and techniques
merit special recognition. The award is co-sponsored by The Ohio Society
of CPAs and the American Accounting Association Ohio Region.
