Food versus fuel debate
"overblown".
Food versus fuel debate "overblown": The "food
versus fuel debate" is an "overblown concern," according
to Don Endres, CEO of major U.S. ethanol producer VeraSun Energy. He
told delegates at the World Ethanol 10th anniversary conference that 46
percent of the bumper U.S. corn was used for feed, and that livestock
will continue to be the main destination for this crop. He acknowledged
that there had been food price inflation and that certain grain costs
had increased significantly, but it was doubtful whether the recent rise
in corn prices could carry the whole blame. He added that corn yields
had almost doubled in recent years, and crops were now being seen in
some states of up to 320 bushels an acre. This should ensure a plentiful
supply for the future, he concluded.
