Anchorage-based General Communication Inc. plans to build a new $30 million fiber-optic cable network in Southeast Alaska. The 754 miles of cable will connect Ketchikan, Wrangell, Petersburg, Angoon and Sitka to GCI's current fiber-optic cable linking Alaska and the Lower 48. The new cable also will provide a second fiber link to Juneau, offering alternative routing and overflow traffic handling capabilities. More than 50,000 Southeast residents will have access to new and faster services with the new fiber-optic cable.
GCI officials expect the fiber to begin operations in November 2008.
