Municipal Light & Power of Anchorage has added a new power-generating unit--the first such unit to come online since 1984. The new unit is more efficient, delivering more and cleaner energy for the same amount of fuel. The contractor on the two-year project was Peak Oilfield Service Co., a subsidiary of Cook Inlet Region Inc. The new simple-cycle gas turbine operates at Hank Nikkels Plant 1 in the Ship Creek area. ML&P serves about 30,000 customers in a 20-square-mile area that includes Elmendorf Air Force Base, Fort Richardson, downtown, midtown and the university-medical district. ML&P is owned by the Municipality of Anchorage.
