First National Bank Alaska boosts salmon gift to Iraq.(DONATIONS)

First National Bank Alaska donated $1,000 to help Kenai Peninsula salmon reach U.S. troops serving in Iraq. The effort was originally organized by Soldotna Mayor Dave Carey and his brother, Mike Carey, a Vietnam veteran. Their project stalled when organizers realized regulations prohibited shipping civilian gifts with regular cargo from Fort Richardson in Anchorage. The Careys donated $500 and received $500 from state Sen. Tom Wagoner, R-Kenai, although they needed further funding. Charlie Weimer, Kenai Peninsula regional manager for the bank, helped secure First National's donation. The shipment arrived May 15 in Iraq and was distributed to 56 military personnel from the Kenai Peninsula or with family from that area.
