The University of Alaska Fairbanks has awarded its 2007 Emil Usibelli Distinguished Teaching, Research and Public Service awards to Yelena Matusevich, A. David McGuire and Shirish Patil. Matusevich, an associate professor of French, received the teaching award. She has taught languages for eight years at UAF, where she revamped the French program by creating new classes and increasing extracurricular and exchange opportunities. Ecology professor McGuire received the research award. He joined the faculty in 1995 and has earned international acclaim for his research on high-latitude terrestrial ecosystems and how they fit in the global climate system. His work has been frequently published, and he has received more than $20 million in research grants. Pantil, an associate professor of petroleum engineering, was honored with the public service award. He is chairman of the UAF petroleum-engineering department and is director of the Petroleum Development Laboratory. His service participation includes local, state and national groups, ranging from professional organizations to student clubs and K-12 outreach.
