Port of Seattle Chief Executive Officer Tay Yoshitani is charting a course for the future of the port amid competition from other Northwest coast ports. Yoshitani detailed his plans in an August 2 article he wrote for the Seattle Times. The port includes the seaport and Seattle International Airport. Yoshitani announced plans to create a new real estate division, which would include seaport and airport properties. He also intends to increase the port's emphasis on environmentally-friendly efforts. Yoshitani, who took charge of the post in March, was critical of a move by the Port of Tacoma to woo one of Seattle's major customers. The Port of Seattle aims to award 10 percent of its contracts to small and disadvantaged businesses, which accounted for $6 million in contracts for the first half of 2007.
