A high-tech project funded by the Defense Department's Missile
Defense Agency has yielded lasers that have the size, expense and
reliability of diode lasers and the beam quality of more costly
solid-state systems.
In its commercial guise, the new mini lasers are expected to
facilitate sharper image televisions with fewer bulky components.
Participating in the project to develop these lasers are the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Lincoln Laboratory at
Lexington, Mass.; Coherent Laser Group of Acton, Mass.; and, Novalux
Inc. of Sunnyvale, Calif.
