India, Russia and China top the list of emerging countries for retail development, according to the A.T. Kearney 2007 Global Retail Development Index. The index ranks the top 30 emerging countries for retail development using macroeconomic and retail-specific variables. Retailers like Wal-Mart and Starbucks have plans to enter the India market. Wal-Mart also plans to expand upon its presence in China. Consumer readiness is key to a retailer's success abroad. Consumers readiness for new ideas, new products and formats is just as important as the market's situation.
