The Alaska Power Association honored several instate utilities for excellent safety records for 2006. The association, formerly known as the Alaska Rural Electric Cooperative Association, is the 56-year old statewide trade association for urban and rural electric utilities. Six utilities received safety awards in different categories: Golden Valley Electric Association and Anchorage Municipal Light & Power; Barrow Utilities and Electric Cooperative Inc.; Kotzebue Electric Association; Thomas Bay Power Authority and in the telecommunications category, Arctic Slope Telephone Association Cooperative. Eight utilities received Safety Achievement Awards for efforts preventing worker injuries and reducing lost-time injuries: Arctic Slope Telephone Association Cooperative, Barrow Utilities and Electric Cooperative Inc., Copper Valley Electric Association, Inside Passage Electric Cooperative, INN Electric Cooperative, Kotzebue Electric Association, Thomas Bay Power Authority and Naknek Electric Association.
