Associated General Contractors honors top projects: name safety and Hard Hat Award winners announced.(AGC 2007 CONSTRUCTION AWAR

The state's largest construction organization, the Associated General Contractors of Alaska (AGC), recognized its top projects, safety programs and individuals during the association's annual conference in Anchorage Nov. 14 to Nov. 17.

Mike Miller of Anchorage, AGC president in 2000, was named winner of the prestigious Hard Hat Award for 2007. The Hard Hat Award is given annually to an AGC member who has demonstrated exemplary service to AGC, the community and the industry. Miller is with Wilder Construction.

In the Alaska USA Insurance Brokers-Sponsored Excellence in Construction Awards, Osborne Construction of Fairbanks won "Meeting the Challenge of a Job-Buildings over $15 million" for the Southern Cross Family Housing Replacement at Fort Wainwright.

Other winners are:

* Buildings; Job between $5 million and $15 million--Roger Hickel Contracting, Anchorage, for Service High School Renewal;

* Buildings: Job under $5 million--Davis Constructors and Engineers Inc., Anchorage, for Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program Facility;

* Transportation, Marine, Heavy Earthmoving: Job over $3 million--Roger Hickel Contracting, Anchorage, for UPS Ramp Expansion Phase 2;

* Transportation, Marine, Heavy, Earthmoving: Job under $3 million--West Construction Co., Anchorage, for Bear Valley Bridge for the Alaska Railroad Corp.;

* Specialty Contractor Transportation, Marine, Heavy, Earthmoving--American Marine Corp, Anchorage, for Kodiak Fiber Line Repair;

* Specialty Contractor, Vertical Coldfoot Environmental Services, Inc., Anchorage, for Elmendorf Air Force Base Central Power Plant Abatement.

Winners of the Marsh-sponsored Excellence in Safety Awards are:

* Excellence in Safety--Building: Kiewit Building Group, Anchorage;

* Excellence in Safety--Highway/Heavy: Alaska Interstate Construction LLC, Anchorage;

* Excellence in Safety--Specialty: Kakivik Asset Management LLC, Anchorage;

* Excellence in Safety--Associate: Spenard Builders Supply, Anchorage;

* Excellence in Safety--Individual: Gary Roseen, Kakivik Asset Management LLC, Anchorage

AGC also announced the following winners:

* Associate of the Year:--Andy Milner Co., Anchorage;

* Volunteer of the Year: Bardie Scarbrough, Wilder Construction Co., Anchorage;

* Supplier of the Year: Mark Houle, Spenard Builders Supply, Anchorage.

The Associated General Contractors of Alaska is a 650member, statewide association for companies in the construction/ contracting business, including building, highways/utilities, heavy industrial and specialty areas.

Construction is the thirdlargest industry in Alaska, contributing more than $7 billion to the Alaska economy, paying the second-highest wages, with more than 21,000 in the work force.
