Within the $200,000-$699,000 budget range, executive directors, or the equivalent, at health & human services organizations are paid more than their counterparts at other types of nonprofits. Conversely, in the $2-million to $9.9-million budget range, they are the lowest paid, according to a 2007 salary survey of New York City area nonprofits. The survey, in its third year, also observed about a 6-percent increase in salaries each year.

The salary survey of members of the Nonprofit Coordinating Committee (NPCC) of New York, tabulated more than 380 responses and is the largest survey of NYC area nonprofits with operating budgets less than $10 million.

Meant as an informational study and not a comparative analysis, said NPCC's Dan Myers, the findings provide insight into the current salaries for the four "top" positions: executive director, deputy director, top development, and chief financial officer. Salary data were also gathered for administrative assistants.

Aggregated salary data are arrayed in three ways: by budget size; by organization type (arts, health, education) within budget size; and, by number of full-time staff.

The survey found EDs at education-related groups are among the most poorly paid in the S400,000-S999,000 range, while public/social benefit EDs are among the best in the $2-million to S9.9-million budget range. For groups with budget ranges between $500,000 and $599,000 the median salary for the ED is $75,000,for the deputy director it's S47,000, for the development director it's $50,000, and the CFO makes on average $45,000.

For those groups between $5 and $6 million, the median salary for the ED is $146,500, for the development director it's $96,000, for the deputy director it's $102,000, and the CFO makes $95,000.
