Charity turns chicken.(Who ... When ... Where ... How ... WHAT?)

So hopelessly repressed they've been the subject of both Hollywood film (2000's Chicken Run, starring the jabber-mouthed Mel Gibson as Rocky the Rooster) and of numerous nationwide movements (PETA vs. KFC/Tyson Foods/Pilgrim's Pride Corp., the list goes on ...), chickens can finally breathe a sigh of relief.

The American Humane Association (AHA) in Denver recently signed "America's No. 1 branded egg" company, Eggland's Best, to the organization's certification program. Typically limited to smaller, lesser-known producers, Eggland's participation in the program marks a move from the organic aisle to the mainstream--a big win for AHA, and for chickens everywhere.

This means, among other things, that the King of Prussia, Pa.-based egg producer will let AHA check facilities for adequate space, and access to water, shelter, a good diet and to prompt medical care.
