Milk output up 3.8% in November: U.S. milk production in the 23
major states during November totaled 13.833 billion pounds (6.27 million
tonnes), up 3.8% from November 2006, according to figures released by
USDA. Output since July 2007 has been running 3% plus above year-earlier
levels, ranging from 3.1% in September to 4.1% in October. During the
first six months of 2007, production increases had ranged from 0.6% in
February to 1.8% in January. Production per cow averaged 1,654 lbs in
the 23 states, 40 lbs above November 2006. The number of milk cows on
farms was 8.36 million head, 101,000 head more than November 2006, and
8,000 head more than October 2007.
