World Wildlife Fund a 'green' organization.(Who ... When ... Where ... How ... WHAT?)

Who said it wasn't easy being green? Well, maybe Kermit the Frog was the first to say it, but now World Wildlife Fund (WWF) can also join the chorus. And, you'd think it would be a no-brainer.

Computerworld Magazine selected its "Top Green-IT Companies for 2008" in its Feb. 18 edition and the only nonprofit organization among the anything-but-dirty dozen was WWF.

The Arlington, Va.-based environmental group was recognized for using energy-saving technologies and carbon dioxide-reducing business practices.

"We have a responsibility to walk the walk by putting conservation actions we promote to the rest of the world into everyday action in our own work environment," said Greg Smith, CIO at WWF. "IT has proven to be one area in which we can really make a difference."

The IT department has incorporated a variety of cost-saving and energy-saving techniques, such as running software from a remote server and using VMware virtualization software with blade services to reduce energy consumption and air conditioning requirements. WWF also promotes videoconferencing instead of business travel when possible. To reduce electricity consumption, it purchases Energy-Star compliant computers and networking printers. Employees use power management settings on computers and IT staff set network printers to revert to sleep mode when not in use.
