Business Publisher • March 17, 2008 •

ALM (New York), formerly American Lawyer Media and now an Incisive Media (London) unit that produces legal and business information, has acquired Altman Weft Publications, Inc. (Newtown Square, PA) from Altman Weil, Inc. No terms of the deal were given. Altman Weil provides management consulting services to law firms, law departments and legal vendors throughout North America, South America, the U.K. and Europe.

Altman Weil Publication currently produces ten major surveys annually focusing primarily on the economics and management of law firms. Surveys include the "Survey of Law Firm Economics," which provides economic performance data on private law firms in the U.S. Benchmark information in the study includes financial statement performance, billing rates, billable hours, compensation and leverage. The study, which has been published for 30 years, covered 285 law firms in 2006. The group also publishes the related "Small Law Firm Economic Survey," with similar information on that market segment.

Other studies include the "Senior Leadership Survey for Law Firms" and the "Compensation Systems in Private Law Firms Survey," as well as surveys conducted in partnership with the International Paralegal Management Association (IPMA; Avondale Estates, GA) and on behalf of other membership associations within the legal industry.

Altman Weil will become a part of ALM Research which produces ALM Research Online, a subscription database of legal market intelligence, as well as a number of syndicated survey reports, including the annual "Law Firm Business Development Survey," the "Global Law Firm Knowledge Management Survey" and the "Law Firm Outsourcing Survey."

ALM Senior Vice President lack Berkowitz said the "significant legacy survey data that exists offers new opportunities to expand research services to current and potential clients. The combination of data from these two groups will make ALM the 'go-to' source for information about law firms and their clients." ALM currently owns and produces 33 national and regional magazines and newspapers, including "The American Lawyer," "Corporate Counsel," "The National Law journal" and "Real Estate Forum."
