Owens Corning (NYSE:OC), Toledo, Ohio, a world leader in building
materials systems and glass fiber reinforcements, has developed new
blowing agent technology that will allow the company to manufacture its
complete line of foam insulating systems in North America with more than
a 70 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and zero ozone
depletion.
Owens Corning has already begun the conversion of its foam
insulation manufacturing facilities to the new blowing agent technology.
The timetable will ensure the full conversion of its North American
manufacturing footprint for foam insulation, inclusive of the start-up
of a new facility in Gresham, Ore., prior to the Montreal Protocol
mandate of 2010.
"The development of this new technology and investment in the
full conversion of our manufacturing facilities reflects our long-term
commitment to our customers and the growth of their businesses,"
said Kim Howard, vice president and general manager, foam insulation.
"We will continue to look for new technologies that better deliver
insulating systems, save energy, protect the environment, and meet our
customers' needs."
Owens Corning PINK Foamular(R) and PROPINK(R) Rigid Foam insulating
systems save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by providing a
durable exterior sheathing that is resistant to damage, provides an
insulating value of R5 per inch, and is moisture resistant. Owens
Corning foam insulation products are used in above and below grade
applications in residential, commercial and industrial markets.
Commitment to Sustainability
Investing in new technology for foam insulation manufacturing is
one way that Owens Corning is fulfilling its commitment to
sustainability - greening its products, greening its operations, and
improving the energy efficiency of the built environment.
"An investment in insulation manufacturing is a long-term
investment in energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction," said
Frank O'Brien-Bernini, chief sustainability officer. "Extruded
polystyrene foam board is an important insulation product that meets the
market need for efficient thermal performance combined with durability
and moisture resistance. Simultaneous with this major technology
conversion, we remain focused on further reducing energy intensity and
emissions from our manufacturing operations around the world."

FURNACE >TX Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation Air
Pollution Control Division announced that the Central Boiler E-Classic
2300 model outdoor wood furnace has been certified by Vermont to meet
their particulate emissions standard of 0.44 lbs/million Btu of heat
input. In fact, the unit meets Vermont's proposed future emissions
level of 0.32 lbs/million Btu heat output.
After March 31, 2008, only outdoor wood furnaces that have been
certified by Vermont to meet their standard are allowed to be sold or
installed in Vermont. The Central Boiler E-Classic 2300 is the only
outdoor wood furnace to receive certification from Vermont.
The E-Classic 2300, which was introduced last year, shatters
virtually every preconceived notion about emissions and efficiencies of
wood heating. The E-Classic 2300 is so clean and efficient that it
operates with combustion efficiencies greater than 98%. High combustion
and delivered efficiencies together create more heat per pound of wood
and extremely low emissions.
The E-Classic 2300 DF has an optional gas-fired wood ignition and
dual fuel backup for the convenience of the consumer. This furnace
offers a cleaner way to provide 100% of the heat for homes,
outbuildings, farms and businesses. It combines the use of a totally
renewable, carbon neutral fuel with the economics of wood and
convenience of longer burn times. In addition, when wood is burned in an
E-Classic outdoor wood furnace, it is the safest way to heat a home or
building because the combustion takes place outside, eliminating the
risk of an indoor fire, indoor smoke and carbon monoxide buildup in the
home associated with indoor home heating appliances.
Central Boiler, with a commitment to designing environmentally
responsible and industry-leading technologies, also has two outdoor wood
furnace models on the EPA's list of cleaner OWHHs. The E-Classic
2300 outdoor furnace has the largest capacity, highest heat output,
highest efficiency and lowest emissions per heat delivered in comparison
with other units that meet the EPA's OWHH Program. Central Boiler
is increasing production and shipments of the E- Classic 2300 models due
to demand.
"We're proud that Central Boiler continues to lead the
outdoor wood furnace industry," said Dennis Brazier, president and
CEO of Central Boiler. "We produced the first two outdoor furnace
models to have met the EPA's OWHH Program and we have the first
outdoor furnace model to be certified by Vermont. Being the only
manufacturer on the EPA's list of cleaner OWHHs to have met the
0.32 lbs/million Btu heat output emissions limit, which Vermont and
other states have proposed for the future, demonstrates our
technological leadership and commitment to producing environmentally
responsible outdoor wood furnaces."
Other types of wood heating appliances can not offer all the
advantages of an E-Classic outdoor wood furnace. An economical,
environmentally responsible heating alternative, the E-Classic outdoor
wood furnace uses a totally renewable resource which, when burned,
results in no net increase in greenhouse gas emissions (carbon dioxide).
As a "green" choice, the E-Classic is good for the
environment, which is good for everyone.
Central Boiler is a leading manufacturer of quality outdoor wood,
wood pellet and corn furnaces. They have been manufacturing outdoor
furnaces for 23 years. Central Boiler has a sales and dealer network
established throughout the United States and Canada.
