Dr. Mark Wach, AMI Board member and a leading fungal scientist in the United States, has received the highest honor China awards to foreign experts for helping advance the development of Chinese society, economy, technology, science and education. Director of Research for Sylvan Inc., Dr. Wach received the 2007 China Friendship Award, one of only 50 foreigners working there to be so honored. The award is akin to the Freedom Medals awarded by the United States to citizens of merit.

"I was overwhelmed," Dr. Wach said. "To be recognized in such a way is a unique honor and I'm very proud and pleased with it."

It was Dr. Wach's second honor bestowed by the Chinese. In 2006, the Province of Fujian, where a vast majority of China's mushrooms are grown, awarded him a similar medal for his contributions to improving mushroom production.

Dr. Wach earned his undergraduate degree at the University of California and his master's and doctorate degrees from The Pennsylvania State University.
