A seminar on the beneficial uses of mushroom compost for crop farmers was recently held in Cochranville, PA. About 25 farmers attended the workshop along with 10 mushroom growers and composters. The program was organized by the SMS Compost Committee of the Community Awareness Committee and sponsored by the American Mushroom Institute and the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau.

Topics and presenters included "Essential Plant Nutrients in Mushroom Compost," by Mike Fidanza, Ph.D.; Long Term Benefits of Amending the Soil with Compost," by Joe DiNorscia; "Calculating I low Much Mushroom Compost to Apply to Meet Nitrogen Needs for Crops," Joseph Poppiti; and "Cost of Mushroom Compost Compared to Commercial Fertilizer," Don Moore. Kerry Hoffman-Richards, Ph.D., gave an interactive presentation complete with remote control tabulators for her talk on "Understanding Pesticide Exposure." A core credit was offered.
