Massey Ferguson introduced the first totally integrated, self
propelled combine in 1938 (inset).
"While other manufacturers hung equipment on tractors,"
says Kevin Bien, Prod Mktg Mgr, Massey Ferguson, "Massey
Harris' Chief Harvesting Engineer Tom Carroll designed a harvester
with a dedicated power unit that supplied all components from the cutter
bar to the grain cleaning system with large front drive axle and rear
axle steering."
However, the key to the combine's success, explains Bien, was
the careful synergy achieved between each individual component.
"That was as vital to the success of that first machine in 1938 as
it is in our current Class VIII machines (shown above.)."
