RMI's Laura Smith dies suddenly.

Laura Smith, vice president and director of management at RMI Direct Marketing in Danbury, Conn., died suddenly while at the movies with her fiance on April 5. The death was reported as natural causes but details were not available.

Colleagues at the firm called Smith "the heart and soul of the company." A memorial to her remains on the company's Web site at www.rmidirect.com

Smith started in the direct marketing industry at age 17 at AZ Marketing. She joined RMI Direct in 1988 and was quickly promoted to director of management.

She was involved with numerous industry organizations, including the New England Mail Order Association, the Direct Marketing Club of New York and the Direct Marketing Association's Catalog Council. She was past president of the Hudson Valley Direct Marketing Association.
