THE TRANSIT TIME for cargo form Mombasa to Kampala had been reduced from 21 days to an average of seven days. Speaking to the press, the Rift Valley Railways (RVR) MD Roy Puffet said this was a notable achievement in the first year of their concession. RVR took over the divested Uganda and Kenya Railways network last year and was celebrating its first anniversary with the flagging off the first frieght train from Kampala destined for Mombasa. The 1,335km rail network that RVR inherited, Puffet said, was in a poor state and hampered effort to boost cargo volumes within the first year of operation. RVR has pragrammes to rehabilitate the network and modernise the locomotive fleet.
