THE BENGUELA CURRENT Commission (BCC) has been recently established to assist Angola, Namibia and South Africa to implement an ecosystem approach to managing the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem (BCLME).
The commission has been established as an initiative of the UNDP-GEF. The three countries will work together to address transboundary fisheries management, protection of vulnerable species and habitats and the coordination of regional efforts to mitigate the impacts of marine mining and oil and gas exploration and production on the marine environment.
It will make recommendations to the three countries on research and management issues and provide the best available scientific advice relating to sustainable utilisation, conservation and protection of the BCLME. The BCLME programme coordination unit is based in Windhoek, Namibia.
Scientific links will be established with international organisations, donor agencies, conventions and other related regional programmes and commissions such as SADC secretariat and NEPAD, including the Abidjan and Nairobi Conventions.
