* Cynthia S. Sullivan of The Lubrizol Corporation addressed the
Personal Care Products Council (formerly CTFA) about Registration,
Evaluation, Authorization and Restrictions of Chemicals (REACH) in a
special workshop held Feb. 6-7 in Washington, D.C.
Ms. Sullivan focused on REACH from a cosmetic industry supplier
perspective and discussed how The Lubrizol Corporation is managing and
collating all of the information related to complying with REACH.
According to the company, Lubrizol has identified key activities
and milestones including pre-registration readiness.
Ms. Sullivan says, "Although pre-registration will be
happening in the latter part of the year, our systems will need to be in
place to handle the 11-year period after that when non-pre-registered
chemicals will require action.
"We're confident that our systems will be in place and
that we'll be ready to help our customers with any questions or
concerns they may have throughout this process."
To allow for learning, discussion, and effective questions and
answers, the seminar included three concurrent workshops that were
repeated three times with small groups. At the end of the seminar, the
groups came together for a report on key issues and follow-up questions.
"I want to provide insight into how complex the issue is for
the supplier to the cosmetic industry and to allay any concerns our
customers or the industry has about our readiness," says Ms.
Sullivan.
The overall workshop highlighted, among other issues, how companies
are organized to take REACH into account; experiences to date with
substance inventories; communications throughout the supply chain;
managing information flow; and the International Uniform Chemical
Information Database (IUCLID 5), which plays a central role in the IT
environments of all organizations coping with the data submission
requirements of REACH.
