IT WAS a feast fit for a king.

Last night's finale of Newcastle Gateshead Eat! Festival featured rare ingredients from around the world that have been listed as endangered species.

Delicacies on the menu included raisins from Afghanistan, Herdwick mutton from Cumbria and capers from Bollabar in Spain. Even the traditional Jersey Royal was served up to the diners because it is in danger of disappearing.

Organisers of the event worked around the clock to try and secure 17 ingredients that are on the edge of extinction to serve at the evening's event.

The ingredients are featured in Slow Food's Ark of Taste - a list of at-risk species.

The winner of North East Chef of the Year was also announced of the event.

Parichat Somsri-Kirby, from Cafe 21 in Fenwick, was awarded the title by last year's winner Dave Kennedy, of the Brasserie Black Door at the Biscuit Factory.

Parichat said: "I am absolutely delighted to win."
