Sharing great solutions at the Congress of Cities and Exposition is
another form of public service, say past attendees.
"It is great to do public service in this way," said Ross
Turkus, senior administrative specialist, Portland, Ore.
Since last year's Congress of Cities, the City of Portland has
been contacted numerous times by jurisdictions across the country
interested in using aspects of its model program Living Smart, a design
program for homes built on narrow lots that addresses development issues
ranging from redevelopment of existing housing to new development in
target growth areas. Portland's example was highlighted as part of
the 2007 City Showcase.
There are multiple ways to share great ideas with other cities at
this years Congress of Cities, held in Orlando, Fla., November 11-15.
Deadlines are fast approaching for two options: A Call for Great
Solutions and the City Showcase.
NLC is issuing a Call for Great Solutions to gather innovative
solutions and great ideas that address issues facing cities. If a city
is selected, its solutions will be incorporated into this year's
Congress of Cities.
NLC wants to ensure that its 7,000 Congress of Cities delegates
have access to the full spectrum of knowledge about solutions that
create stronger cities. This is why the organization is reaching out to
colleagues through different networks to tap their wealth of experience,
conference planners explain.
The application deadline for the call for solutions is June 30.
The City Showcase, one of the most popular events at the Congress
of Cities, is an annual exhibition of successful, innovative programs
from cities and towns across the country that attract thousands of
conference participants each year.
Programs selected for the 2008 City Showcase will be featured in
the City Practices Database, an online resource and networking tool, and
will be featured in future Nation's City Weekly issues.
The application deadline for the City Showcase is July 3.
