The Ministry of Northern Development and Mines
(MNDM) has won the Tom Peters Memorial Mines Reclamation Award for its work on the former Kam Kotia Mine in Timmins.
This award, which honours groundbreaking and innovative work in the promotion of mine reclamation, was created in partnership between Vale Inco Limited, the Canadian Land Reclamation Association (CLRA) and the Ontario Mining Association (OMA).
Tom Peters began his career at the former Inco Limited in 1948, and was instrumental in various initiatives supporting the re-vegetation of tailings and overall land reclamation. He also pioneered the development of agricultural recipes for re-greening mine tailings. These methods have since been adopted as a globally standard practice.
The award is accompanied by a $5,000 bursary in the winner's name to a Masters or PhD-level student pursuing reclamation-related research involving an Ontario mine site. Vale Inco will finance the award, which will be administered through the Ontario chapter of the CLRA.
