Reduce head-bangers with metal-free sausages.

Food Trade Review • June, 2008 • Plant and Equipment

Mettler-Toledo Safeline, the leading metal detection technology specialist, has launched the HDS Pipeline Detector. This innovative pipeline metal detection solution has been developed specifically for use on sausage manufacturing lines where it delivers optimum sensitivity and stability as well as user-friendly operation.

Designed for easy integration with other sausage processing machinery, the HDS Pipeline Detector offers consistent and reliable performance in harsh meat processing environments. HDS systems are sealed to IP69K standard to withstand the most stringent of washdown regimes. They use Mettler-Toledo Safeline's advanced detection coil technology and incorporate its Signature software platform for controlled detection sensitivity.

All metal types can be detected, including ferrous, non-magnetic stainless steels and non-ferrous metals including aluminium. HDS systems are also able to detect non-spherical contaminants such as metal clips used to crimp sausages, wire, swarf and slivers of metal introduced during grinding processes. These contaminants are traditionally difficult to locate due to a phenomenon known as the "orientation effect".

To minimise product "creaming" (uneven distribution of sausage fats towards the outside of the sausage), the metal detector also incorporates short throughput tubes and utilises Mettler-Toledo Safeline's patented zero metal free zone (ZFMZ) technology. This enables the pipe's metal fittings and other process equipment to be positioned close to the detection head without compromising detector performance.

In addition, the HDS system's slim, mobile design and compact footprint means it can easily fit in the tightest of environments alongside all leading vacuum fillers. The height of the detection head is adjustable for easy connection with filler outlets. A selection of reject valves with quick release couplings is available for use with all sausage meats, fats, high viscosity pastes and liquids. Twister extensions to suit all leading sausage manufacturing twister attachments are also offered.

Mettler-Toledo Safeline's HDS Pipeline systems can be linked to a wide range of data management solutions via ethernet technology when required for comprehensive remote management and monitoring. Manufacturers can also use this capability to record performance data and to confirm test routines have been completed for complete product trace-ability and proof of due diligence.
