The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority will begin Phase 2 of the Naval Training Center (NTC) Landfill Remediation Project beginning in the first week of August. Phase 2 will include removal of household waste and the proper disposal of these materials at appropriate landfills. The project will be completed in mid-2009. The site of the Remediation Project is a landfill associated with the former NTC property transferred to San Diego International Airport, west of and immediately adjacent to Terminal 2 West. Phase 1 of the NTC Landfill Remediation Project began in January 2008, with work to clean a 20-foot utility easement on the westerly portion of the site. Phase 2 will clean the remainder and the majority of the landfill. Disposal of the waste materials at proper solid-waste landfills will prepare the site for future airport improvements and remove a potential source of groundwater contaminants.
