Firstly, for Environment--new developments sponsored by WRAP and,
secondly, for technical developments sponsored by the PPMA.
The FormShrinkTM Chicken pack, developed by with film partners
Krehalon for 2 Sisters Food Group and Tesco, was designed with a number
of specific objectives: increased shelf life, reduced in store wastage,
better security and reduced packaging waste.
Key benefits delivered to the consumer are reduced packaging and
ease of opening with a specificly designed easy access "tear
tab" and clear simple to read instructions on the special Krehalon
pre-printed top and base films.
"A truly technically innovative pack for whole chickens with
the very real benefit of reducing packaging material usage,"
Starpack awards judges commented. This pack delivered four extra
days' shelf life and a 68 percent reduction in packaging over
traditional packaging formats.
By removing the need for the standard plastic tray traditionally
used by chicken packers, Multivac with its film partners Krehalon has
been able to design a new chicken packaging format.
"The FormshrinkTM Project has been a win-win for everyone. It
has helped 2 Sisters deliver a truly innovative chicken pack for Tesco
that not only offers significant environmental benefits in packaging
waste reduction but also critically offers additional key advantages to
us as packers, to Tesco as the retailer and to you at home as the
consumer." Steve Rooke, packaging development manager, 2 Sisters
Food Group.
The environmental benefits were recognised by Starpack as being
two-fold. Firstly, there was the packaging reduction to the consumer in
terms of the domestic waste stream. But there was also the additional
environmental benefit of producing all the packaging onsite reducing the
carbon emissions from transporting pre-made trays around the country and
an additional win on crate fill with higher volumes per crate.
This resulted in less fuel and fewer journeys with a projected
annualised packaging waste weight reduction of 100 tonnes per year.
"Tesco is committed to packaging reduction wherever possible,
we are therefore delighted that the FormShrinkTM chicken pack has
delivered a 68 per cent reduction in packaging, significantly reduced in
store wastage and most importantly enabled us to offer an even better
quality product with a longer shelf life to our customers," said
Max Tooley, Tesco's technical manager of poultry.
