As work continues on the fifth Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of
Mental Disorders (DSM-V), researchers and clinicians are calling for
better categorical definitions and more quantitative concepts. These
nine papers, part of a recent conference held by the American
Psychiatric Association, the World Health Organization and the US
National Institutes of Health, focus on continuous rather than
categorical diagnostic criteria and other methods of the dimensional
approach. Papers describe the approaches, analyze DSM categories and
dimensions in clinical practice, and offer a dimensional option for the
DSM-V in the diagnosis of substance dependence, major depressive
episodes, the psychosis phenotype, anxiety disorders, and personality
disorders. Papers also describe dimensional approaches to developmental
psychopathology and the work to be done in developing dimensional
options for the DSM-V.
