Known eventually as a medical enclave for those who could afford to
pay high fees, Harley Street has also served as an incubator for some
very real medical advances. Adams, a surgeon and medical historian whose
qualifications include living in nearby Regent's Park for more than
30 years, gives the physicians and others who lived and worked in the
area full consideration, but is also capable of calling a charlatan a
charlatan. His period illustrations are fascinating (the scale of some
of the architecture explains, in part, the scale of the fees) and he
explains the complex evolving medical concepts and practices clearly for
the layman. He pays particular attention to the career of Lister, whose
successful experiments in antisepsis led to his becoming a very big man
amongst all the big houses.
