A social worker in private practice, Leonard shares her research
amongst those born with HIV-1 who are now in adolescence and coping not
only with the challenges of being teenagers but also with the effects of
isolation, neglect, and stigmatization. Leonard's project was to
determine the level to which adolescents were able to attach to their
parents or foster parents, their level of depression, and their ability
to adhere to medication. She found the teens to be less depressed than
expected, and that adherence and attachment have a complex relationship
indicating how attached the teens were had at least some effect on their
adhering to medication.
