NLC's resources and publications keep local government leaders
informed of critical issues affecting municipalities, as well as local
programs and best practices. These resources also inform and are used by
other organizations and agencies at the local level.
According to Vanessa Rush, chair of the Georgia Community Action
Association (GCAA) Poverty Reduction Committee, GCAA follows NLC's
work in poverty reduction and uses resources available on NLC's
website to stay current with poverty and equity work at the local level.
At GCAA's 27th Annual Conference in Savannah, Ga., NLC was
represented by Caterina Bummara as a special exhibitor. Bummara
addressed the group at the conference's town hall meeting event,
where GCAA formally launched its "Rooting out Poverty
Initiative."
Bummara gave an overview of NLC's current poverty work and
provided NLC resources and publications to attendees, including copies
of the Taking Action to Address Poverty City Practice Brief and the
Seizing Opportunities to Develop and Preserve Affordable Housing
Municipal Action Guide, both of which are available online.
Participants came away excited by the amount of resources NLC has
to offer in addressing poverty and equity at the local level.
GCAA is comprised of 20 Community Action Agencies (CAAs). CAAs are
nonprofit private and public organizations established under the
Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 to fight America's War on Poverty.
Community Action Agencies help people to help themselves in achieving
self-sufficiency. Today there are more than 1,000 CAAs in every State
and Puerto Rico. About half of these serve urban areas and half serve
rural areas.
