US biotech concern Genzyme has finalised a licence and
collaboration agreement with California-based Isis Pharmaceuticals for
its second generation antisense lipid-lowering drug mipomersen, which
reduces the production of apoB100, a protein critical to the synthesis
and transport of so-called 'bad' cholesterol. Mipomersen is in
Phase III clinical development. Isis will receive a $175m licence fee,
but will contribute up to $50m in additional development. Further
development costs will be shared equally, but Isis will have an earlier
opportunity to receive $75m in milestone payments.
