The development of a new agreement with the provincial government will find the Anishinabek Nation becoming a more active participant in the Ontario forestry industry.
A Forestry Framework Agreement has been established with the Ministry of Natural Resources, allowing the Anishinabek Nation's 42 member First Nations a stronger role in the forestry process.
This includes improved access to forestry allocations and stronger involvement in forest management planning as well as opportunities for economic development.
"These forestry negotiations mark a significant milestone for our Anishinabek Forestry Commission and the development of a sustainable First Nations economy," said Grand Council Chief John Beaucage in a release.
The Anishinabek Nation has hailed the move as committing the government to making policy changes and taking a more proactive approach, rather than relying on Supreme Court decisions on consultation and other such factors.
