Among 174 eco-friendly and sustainable entries from all over North America, the Vale Inco Living With Lakes Centre has won third prize at the 2008 Holcim Awards.

Held in Montreal, the North American competition found the Sudbury project also being awarded prize money of US$25,000 to put towards the construction of the facility.

The annual Holcim Awards hold competitions across three global regions, including Europe, North America, Latin America, Africa Middle East and Asia Pacific, which see a total of 5,000 applicants.

The top three winners from each region will move onto a global competition in Lucerne, Switzerland in May 2009. This includes the Living With Lakes project, which will be vying for one of the top prizes in international architecture.

This centre will allow Laurentian University to expand research into the restoration and remediation of freshwater lakes, and will be built to the standards of platinum Leadership in Environmental Energy and Design (LEED).
