Tech C.A.B.S.: adding impact to your presentations.(CORPORATE PROFILE)

From a vantage point at the back of the room, Nathan Nicholson oversees the speaker's presentation taking place on the six by eight-foot draped screen at the front of the conference room. He is watching and listening to make sure there are no technical glitches. Confident though that the 3M rear projection system he set up was a good choice. The new DLP projector system is a space saving super short throw projector behind a draped rear projection screen. Rather than taking up useful seating space in the middle of the room, this system allows the speaker and audience all the space they need to interact.

Nicholson, owner of Tech Consulting and Business Solutions, is Northern Ontario's leading supplier and installation of presentation products. They provide the technology and expertise to share information regardless of whether it is two or 2,000 people. From digital whiteboards to web conferencing this family business gets you into future technology today.

Our ability to share information and be interactive anywhere in the world through the constant advancements in technology is getting better and more efficient. However, keeping up with servicing and operating the equipment is sometimes best left to the experts like Tech Consulting.

Nicholson has extensive experience in materials management and presentation products. The family owned and operated business just celebrated five years. With his wife, Darlene and 17-year old son Matt, they provide products and services to meet both private and public sector presentation needs. "I could see where technology was going and it could only be good," says Nicholson taking the leap to entrepreneurship.

Over the years Nicholson has worked with 3M products and is thrilled with their advanced engineering and support. He points out that in 2000 the LCD projector was, in its infancy typically weighing in at 35 pounds while today, less then a decade later, we are seeing the projector become even more portable to the point of fitting in a pocket. "When you made a presentation with an LCD projector it weighed over 30 lbs and you carried it in a padded carrying case that just added to its weight," recalls Nicholson.

"3M patented the super short throw technology used in the DLP projector. These projectors can be installed with a telescopic arm from the wall. No more bulky equipment or having to cut out a slice of the room for the projector and light beam," explains Nicholson. The projector actually beams the light at a sharp angle, rather than from across the room.

Tech Consulting also specializes in the installation of whiteboards with 50 per cent of their business dedicated to the installation of interactive whiteboards across the North. They come in a variety of sizes with a standard four by five-and-a-half feet size.

The more common interactive whiteboard allows you to write or draw on the surface then print it or save it to your computer. What is most advanced is that you can project a computer screen image onto the surface and then control the application by touching the board directly or by using a special pen. As Nicholson says, "it's like a large mouse pad."

The interactive whiteboard involves three parts: the display panel, a computer and a projector and all are connected. Whatever happens on the whiteboard is communicated to the computer either by cable or a wireless connection and interpreted by the software. They also come with extra accessories such as handheld key pads that are also wirelessly connected.

Schools, governments and conference centres are making these a standard piece of equipment. Schools across the North are installing interactive whiteboards in every classroom. "This Interactive whiteboard technology with the wall mounted 3M projectors are really energizing and motivating students at school," reports Nicholson. "Students can work on the board and actively participate in the lessons. It is an engaging and fun learning tool for teacher and students."

Nicholson is a techno-junkie wanting to know where technology is taking us next. He describes himself as 'technically oriented'. He feeds his hunger with attending regular training sessions by companies like 3M, a world wide leader in presentation products.

His latest gadget is the new handheld LED projector the size of a flip phone. He can hook it up to an iPod or iPhone and project on a wall or portable screen. "It's all about light control," informs Nicholson.

Once all the equipment is installed it is useful to have technical support to resolve any glitches in equipment communication. Nicholson and his son Matt spend a significant portion of their time providing technical assistance for meeting and conference organizers.

Clients find it more economical and efficient to hire Tech Consulting to set up and monitor the presentation equipment. Longtime client of Tech Consulting, Garry Clark, executive director of the Ontario Prospector's Association has hired him to manage their presentation needs for the past several years. Clark likes the ability to hand over all the technical requirements of holding a two-day conference with 350 delegates and 30 speakers to Nicholson. "He supplies all the equipment and then produces a CD which we can hand out to delegates. They made it simple to come into Sudbury," said Clark.

Tech Consulting is a business you want watching from the back of the room, ready to usher in the latest presentation technology for your next important meeting or training session.
