The unanimous recommendation of Laurentian University's presidential search committee to name Dominic Giroux as the school's new president has been approved by its board of governors.
Giroux is currently the assistant deputy minister with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities of Ontario. He leads more than 1,200 employees across the two ministries in 10 cities, which include Sudbury, North Bay and Thunder Bay
During his time in government, Giroux has led the creation of an Aboriginal Education Office and has championed a new focus on French-language schools.
In 2008, Giroux received the first Leadership in Education Award from the chancellor of the University of Ottawa, as well as an annual Leadership Award from Montreal's business community
Prior to joining the Ministry, Giroux served as CFO of school boards in southern and eastern Ontario. He is a member of the Ontario College of Teachers, and holds bachelor's degrees in social sciences and education from the University of Ottawa. He also holds a MBA from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales (HEC) in Montreal.
Giroux replaces former president Judith Woodsworth, who was appointed president of Montreal's Concordia University earlier this year.
