MIT Press (Cambridge, MA) this month published "The Privacy Advocates," a softbound book that analyzes the people and groups around the world who have risen to challenge the most intrusive surveillance practices by both government and corporations, including identity cards, biometrics, video surveillance, the use of cookies and spyware, data mining and profiling. Content examines how these groups frame the issue privacy, how they organize and what strategies they use, and carries case studies that illustrate how effective their efforts have been, including conflicts over keyescrow encryption, online advertising through third-party cookies that track users across different web sites, and online authentication mechanisms. It also includes a list of privacy advocacy organizations. It costs $28.
