Turkey Hill Dairy is getting ready for the 2009 summer season with a host of new products and new flavors. Topping the list is the launch of a new line of ice cream cakes. The cakes will initially be available in major grocery store chains in Turkey Hill's core market areas in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, eastern New York, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, Connecticut, and parts of Maryland.
Turkey Hill hopes to eventually expand distribution throughout the company's entire footprint which extends along the East Coast and as far west as Detroit. Stores include Acme, Shoprite, Giant, Martins, A&P, Waldbaums, Superfresh, Foodtown, King Kullen, and Tom's Convenience Stores, as well as selected Turkey Hill Minit Markets.
"Our ice cream and iced teas have always been a part of family and holiday celebrations as a side dish, but now, we're the main attraction," said Turkey Hill President Quintin Frey, who attributed the inspiration for the ice cream cakes to the Dairy's customers. "Folks have been sharing their ice cream cake recipes with us for years, so this seemed like a great way to join the party and keep our fans happy. My grandparents, who started the Dairy by sharing homemade ice cream with neighbors more than 75 years ago, would have loved this."
The cakes, which come in two sizes, are made with swirled chocolate and vanilla ice cream and are "loaded with chocolate cake crunchies and topped with a special ice cream icing." The 8-inch round cake starts at $15 and serves 12 to 14 party-goers, while the quarter sheet cake, at around $19, serves 16 to 20. Each cake has a customizable top to allow customers to add their own unique decorations.
Turkey Hill is also hosting an online contest, giving away free cake certificates at its website, turkeyhill.com. Visitors can enter by "blowing out" 75 candles on a birthday cake. One winner will be selected each week until March, 2010.
In addition to its new cake line, Turkey Hill is introducing a new line of ice cream flavors called Dynamic Duos. Each package actually contains two flavors of the company's Light Recipe Ice Cream side-by-side in order to create "a more dynamic ice cream eating experience." The featured ice creams contain at least 18% fewer calories and 50% less fat than Turkey Hill's line of premium ice cream.
"Everyone has a favorite flavor, and many folks have told us they like to pair more than one flavor on their cone or in their dish," said Quintin Frey, president of Turkey Hill Dairy. "But, we also know from our research that consumers want big flavor experiences without the guilt, so our new line features a great mix of flavors using our delicious Light Recipe Ice Cream."
The Dynamic Duos line includes: Movie Night, a popcorn flavored ice cream with candy-coated popcorn and praline peanuts and vanilla ice cream with caramel swirl; PB Explosion, a vanilla ice cream with choco-peanut butter cups and milk chocolate ice cream with peanut butter swirl; CocoNutz!, a vanilla ice cream with choco-almonds and coconut ice cream with toasted coconut; and Caramel Cone Chaos, caramel ice cream with chocolate-covered cone pieces and vanilla ice cream with caramel swirl.
Not satisfied with two new launches, Turkey Hill has also created a new ice cream flavor inspired by the Phillie Phanatic, the mascot of the World Series-winning Philadelphia Phillies. Called the Phillie Phanatic Double Play, the new ice cream features Bavarian cream-flavored light ice cream with caramel corn and caramel swirl.
"After a season like last year, we knew we'd have to step up to the plate with a little something extra and that's why we developed the new flavor," said Turkey Hill President Frey. "Just like the Phanatic, this ice cream is a little unusual but it's something you can't help but love." Phillie Phanatic Double Play will be sold at Citizens Bank Park and at retail outlets wherever Phillies Graham Slam, the baseball team's official ice cream flavor also developed by Turkey Hill, is sold.
In addition to these launches, Turkey Hill has also announced a host of new flavors and line extensions for existing products. For its Light Recipe line, first introduced in 2006 and extended in 2008 with the inclusion of additional calcium and vitamin D, the company has added a Cookies 'n Cream flavor.
It is also expanding its frozen yogurt line in terms of flavors and nutritional benefits with additional calcium and vitamin D. New flavors for 2009 include Banana Split, Peach Mango and Orange Cream Swirl and Limited Edition flavors like Nutty Caramel Caribou and PomBlueberry Chocolate Chunk.
Turkey Hill has also renamed its Creamy Commotions line of mix-in flavors. Now called Stuff'd, the pint-size lineup features two new Moose Tracks flavors: Chocolate Mint Moose Tracks and Chocolate Nutty Moose Tracks. Another new flavor, Praline Pecan Paradise, will join favorites like Snyder's of Hanover Chocolate Pretzel and Tastykake Peanut Butter Kandy Kake[R].
Turkey Hill Premium Ice Cream Limited Edition line, "a rotating collection of unique small-batch recipes," will have several new flavors for 2009, including Peanut Butter Brownie, Double Dunker (mocha ice cream with chocolate chip cookie dough and a chocolate cookie swirl), and Ginger Snap. Two ice cream sandwich novelties will also be featured in this year's Limited Edition lineup: Strawberry Cheesecake Ice Cream Sandwiches through April and then Peanut Butter Ice Cream Sandwiches for the rest of the year.
The company's Duetto line, which features a mix of soft serve ice cream swirled with the Turkey Hill's signature fruit-flavored Venice Premium Ice, will add Strawberry Banana (Strawberry Venice Premium Ice swirled with Banana soft serve ice cream, as a permanent flavor in 2009. The Duetto line will also include two Limited Edition flavors: Bananas Foster through June and Caramel Apple from July through December.
