Vince Alicandri becomes TEI's 60th president.(Tax Executives Institute)


Vincent Alicandri of the Toronto Chapter became the 60th President of Tax Executives Institute at the conclusion of TEI's Annual Meeting of Members in August. The meeting, which was held in Brewster, Massachusetts, marked the end of the term for Robert J. McDonough of the New England Chapter, who is Senior Vice President-Corporate Tax and Treasurer for Polaroid Corporation in Concord, Massachusetts.

The Institute's Annual Meeting of Members also saw the installation of other Institute officers and new representatives from TEI's 54 chapters. The meeting presented the opportunity for the Institute to release its financial statements for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2008, which reflected revenues totalling nearly $7 million and net revenues for the year of more than $900,000.

At the Board of Directors meeting immediately following the annual meeting, Mr. Alicandri presented, and the Board affirmed, TEI's goals for the year. Mr. Alicandri presented, and the Board affirmed, TEI's goals for the year. Mr. Alicandri explained that the overarching theme of his term would be "Dare to Make a Difference--Get Involved!":

There is no better vehicle for professional development, no more effective way to positively affect the development of tax law and policy, no more rewarding service to the tax community, than to get involved in the Institute's educational, advocacy, and networking opportunities. During the year, we hope to persuade in-house tax professionals around the world of the benefits of not only joining TEI and attending our top-notch educational programs but of stepping up their involvement in our advocacy and other activities.

The Institute's objectives fall into the following categories:

* Membership and Networking: (i) explore establishing a chapter in Australia, including a possible alliance with other organizations; (ii) expand outreach to students; (iii) expand involvement of Chief Tax Officers; (iv) invigorate chapter and regional recruitment and networking efforts; (v) assist chapters in encouraging member participation; and (vi) replace the Institute's website in order to enhance information sharing and networking among members.

* Advocacy: (i) expand advocacy with the OECD and other international organizations; and (ii) review the advocacy mandates of all committees, especially the State and Local Tax Committee and European Direct Tax Committee, to ensure that TEI remains responsive to members needs.

* Education: (i) ensure appropriate attention is devoted to professionalism; and (ii) modify structure and content of educational programs, possibly teaming with other distance-learning providers.

* Management: (i) implement the Social Responsibility Plan adopted in April 2008; (ii) explore strategic collaboration with other providers of educational programs; and (iii) assess TEI's overall staffing needs.

A member for almost 25 years, Mr. Alicandri most recently served the Institute as Senior Vice President and chair of the Continuing Education Committee. He has been a member of TEI's Executive Committee and has served as Regional Vice President. He is a former member of TEI's Canadian Income Tax Committee, which he chaired during 1992-1994. He also chaired the Membership Committee in 2001-2003 and the Awards Committee in 2003-2005. He is a former member of the Communications Committee and TEI's Electronic Coordinating Committee. In 2005, he became Treasurer of the Institute. Mr. Alicandri also served as President of the Toronto Chapter.

Mr. Alicandri is Senior Vice President-Corporate Tax for Hydro One Networks, Inc. in Toronto, Ontario. He is a Chartered Accountant and holds a B.B.A degree from York University.

Also installed at the Annual Meeting of Members were Neil D. Traubenberg of the Denver Chapter as Senior Vice President, Paul O'Connor of the New England Chapter as Secretary, and David M.

Penney of the Toronto Chapter as Treasurer. Nine Regional Vice Presidents and new Chapter Representatives were also installed. At the Board of Directors meeting immediately following the annual meeting, the chairs of the TEI's steering committees were appointed.
