Southwest Airlines
Dr. Karl Felber, who operates the Armistice Urgent Care walk-in clinic in Pawtucket, is accustomed to helping people get through medical emergencies. So it was fortunate that the Cumberland resident was dozing Monday night on a Southwest Airlines flight to Las Vegas for an urgent-care conference when a passenger sitting at the rear of the plane lost consciousness. The 55-year-old woman, being propped up by flight attendants, was ashen, Felber said in a phone interview Friday from poolside at the Mirage Hotel. After checking to ensure nothing was blocking her airway, he said, he began administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation. He did not know it then, but the woman and her husband were returning home to California after attending the funeral of their son. Felber said he was preparing to begin another series of compressions when the woman began breathing on her own and showed other signs of reviving N good news, because the four-hour connector flight from Chicago was still 40 minutes from Las Vegas. Southwest Flight 135 radioed McCarran Airport to have paramedics ready. Felber rummaged through the aircraftOs first-aid kit and found an intravenous tube, which he applied so medication could be given immediately upon landing. During the last 20 minutes of the flight the woman was fully conscious and, according to Felber, was feeling Opretty goodO N so good, in fact, that she and her husband insisted they could continue on to Sacramento. The airline vetoed that plan, though, and a person traveling with the couple accompanied her to a hospital while her husband continued on. May 1, 2009
