Air Senegal International
Air Senegal International suspended all operations last Friday. According to press reports, disputes between 51 percent owner Royal Air Maroc and the Senegalese government over management, control, audits and money owed resulted in the shutdown. RAM provided two 737-700s to the subsidiary and has withdrawn both, leaving ASI with just one -700 and one Dash 8. "For several weeks Royal Air Maroc has warned its Senegalese co-shareholders that there was a risk Air Senegal would stop its activities," RAM said in an April 24 statement. "Royal Air Maroc's planned disengagement should allow the Senegalese state to realize its wish to take control of its national company in the best of conditions." RAM said Senegal owed the airline USD4 million ($5.3 million). Apr 28, 2009

Fourteen airports in Algeria are under threat of closure due to losses incurred from the global economic crisis. Many airports in the North African country are on the verge of bankruptcy in the wake of the economic downturn, which has hit air transportation around the world. UK operator Bmi is interested in opening a link to the Iraqi capital Baghdad, and has met with Iraqi Government representatives with a view to establishing a connection. Neither UK nor Iraqi airlines fly between the two countries and BMI - which gained a Middle Eastern network when it took over British Mediterranean Airways - says any service will depend on security, regulatory and operational considerations. But BMI, which met Iraqi representatives during a business forum in London, says it is "ready, willing and ideally-placed" to operate between London Heathrow and Baghdad. Apr 27, 2009

Tanzania, Ethiopian Airlines
The Tanzania Tourist Board, with Ethiopian Airlines Journeys, Asante Safaris, Dhana Safaris and Serena Hotels & Lodges, launched an OArcheology LoversO TourO to Tanzania/Ethiopia. The Tanzania portion of the tour, part of the live charity auction at the dinner, was created to mark the 50th anniversary celebration, Aug. 17, of the discovery of the first humanoid skull, OZinjanthropusO (Zinj) by doctors Mary and Louis Leakey. The discovery was made at Oldupai Gorge in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The well-preserved skull and teeth were to rewrite archeological history. It allowed scientists to prove conclusively that the beginnings of man occurred in Africa, not in Asia as previously thought. And the OZinjO skull also gave the world the first credible date that this early group of humanoids walked the earth 2 million years ago. www.tanzaniatouristboard.com, www.seeyouinethiopia.com/archeology.
