Asiana Airlines
The Washington Department of Ecology says Asiana Airlines is off the hook for spilling fuel from one of its jets over Puget Sound after the plane experienced engine problems and had to make an emergency landing at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport last week. Ecology Spills Program Manager Dale Jensen in a news release that no fines or penalties will be levied because the fuel release was part of an emergency situation. May 6, 2009
Sichuan
Ahead of the one-year anniversary of the 8.0-magnitue earthquake, southwest China's Sichuan province, once a tourist hotspot for both domestic and overseas tourists has endeavored to rejuvenate its tourism industry shaken by last year's May 12 earthquake. As part of the measures, local authorities in Sichuan launched the unprecedented "price lowland" policy in late March offering considerable discounts to tourists from home and abroad for visiting scenic spots in the province. In memorial of the 5/12 Wenchuan earthquake, the School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), and the Sichuan Tourism Administration (STA) will jointly stage the Sixth China Tourism Forum in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China, from May 12-13, 2009. Soon after the devastating earthquake on May 12, 2008, the tourism experts from SHTM visited the quake-hit areas and offered advice to the tourism recovery and reconstruction efforts spearheaded by the China National Tourism Administration and Sichuan Tourism Administration. Thailand
Two young women N one from the United States and the other from Norway N died after suddenly falling ill within hours of each other at a guesthouse on a tourist resort island in southern Thailand. Police said Thursday they did not know the cause of the deaths, though various theories have circulated, including food or alcohol poisoning and toxic fumes. The two women were staying on Koh Phi Phi, a popular destination for budget travelers. The American was identified by her family as Jill St. Onge, 27, a bartender and artist from Seattle, who died Sunday. Norwegian media and the Web newspaper Andaman Times identified the Norwegian as Julie Michelle Bergheim, 22. She died Monday. Both women, who stayed at the Laleena guesthouse but were not known to have been in contact with each other, suffered severe vomiting and stomach pains. May 8, 2009
