Budget hotel chain Travelodge posted an 11 percent rise in pre-tax earnings to GBP 57.9m for 2008 compared with GBP 52.3m in 2007. The group, which operates 380 hotels in the UK, Ireland and Spain, said it enjoyed a 19 percent rise in revenue during the year. This took its revenue form GBP 243.8m in 2007 to GBP 289.7m last year. The number of rooms sold rose by 9 percent to 6m while occupancy levels were at 74 percent. It said that it achieved during the years it planned growth for the UK by opening 39 new hotels (3,844 rooms) which created 750 new jobs. www.travelodge.co.uk May 14, 2009

von Essen hotels have launched "Clearer Conscience Conferences," a new programme aimed to help local suppliers and Just a Drop charity. The Royal Crescent in Bath, Seaham Hall near Newcastle and Cliveden near London are the first von Essen hotels to implement the new programme. The hotels will feature menus that use ingredients sourced within five miles of the hotel. von Essen is also donating GBP 1 per delegate to Just a Drop international charity, which aims to provide clean water and sanitation "where it is needed most," the company said.
