The Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight (OFHEO) spent nearly 9% of its annual budget responding to a discovery request for documents in a case involving Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae.
According to Information Week, an OFHEO attorney agreed to a search of backup tapes. The search, which involved 400 search terms supplied by plaintiffs' attorneys, resulted in more than 600,000 responsive documents. In addition to the cost of restoring the backup tapes, OFHEO contracted with 50 attorneys to sift through the material. OFHEO also missed several court deadlines and was sanctioned.
