Combining academic and scientific research with her personal experience interacting with people, Mander (midwifery, U. of Edinburgh, Scotland) offers advice to other midwives caring for a mother experiencing any form of loss in childbearing. Her concern is to prevent unnecessary suffering not only by the mother who fails to receive appropriate care, but also by the midwife who knows that what she provided was not enough. Her topics include researching childbearing loss, caring for the grieving mother, family grief, the death of a mother, staff grieving and crying, and future childbearing. Her personal and informal style of writing has survived the sneering of critics about being chatty. The first edition was published by Blackwell Scientific in 1994.
