Despite the recession, U.S. businesses see opportunities in new markets, green initiatives, and sectors such as biotech, energy, and aerospace and defense. According to a survey, by GlobalSpec--www.globalspec. com--"How Industrial Companies Can Succeed in the Current Economy," there are opportunities.
The survey also found
* 59 percent of companies will be spending more time and effort in 2009 entering new markets;
* 50 percent of companies plan to spend more time working on projects to save energy; and
* 48 percent plan to spend more time on working to reduce waste and scrap.
Opportunities look strong in biotech and pharmaceutical, utilities and energy, and aerospace and defense sectors.
The survey of more than 3,800 engineering, technical, manufacturing, and industrial professionals was completed in the first quarter of 2009 and focused on the key research and development purchasing decision makers in industrial companies across the nation, including
* 92 percent of respondents who are involved in purchasing components and services;
* 59 percent who influence more than $50,000 in annual spending on components, equipment, and services; and
* 32 percent who influence more than $200,000 in spending.
